Record Breaking End of the week!

Hey Kids!

Yesterday I set three personal records! No to brag but eh-hmm;-)

Screen Shot 2016-04-03 at 2.53.45 PM

I felt good besides an injury I have. I have a slight sprain in my right ankle/foot that flared up at around mile 11 ish so it definitely slowed me down for the last few miles and totally zapped my energy levels. The injury is improving though and I am confident through my stretching routine and help from the witch doctor Ill be all good for the NJ Marathon!

I had to stop frequently to stretch it out. When I did though, I would put both hands up above my shoulder level on a tree or post and twist into my prescribed stretch. Every time I did this I would scoff with disgust from the smell I seemed to be emanating. I thought to my self that there is no way I could smell that bad because I had showered and my clothes were clean etc. At mile 12 I won the “find the smell” contest and concluded that  it was definitely time for a new I phone holder.

images-17

Iv been running with , and consequently sweating into, the same one for wayyyyyyyy too long now and I think its just natures way of saying “time to move on buddy.”

To prep for the race I have been employing gels every 45 minutes which definitely help.  I want to try some different ones this week to see what will serve me best during the race. I also have become squirrel-like and mastered stashing water at the perfect location for these very long runs. Additionally, I have significantly increased my calorie and carb intake during the week which has to be helping. Basically I am just pounding Bagels!!!! It’s awesome.

images-16

Kicks are breaking in but I’m still not crazy about them. I’m very, very sore and tired but I am excited to get to the end of the training. This week I have an 5M, 8M and 3M culminating on a short 14mile on Saturday. The week after that is the big 20 mile! Keep spreading the word for donations!!!! Thanks for all of the support everyone!!!!!! Link to the left!

New Kicks!!!! Week 14

Hey Kids,

I took a quick blog break to give it a rest but it did not slow me down at all and a lot has happened since this:

 1929672_10101711179474672_7657104314421679631_n-1

That was a 5mile around my neighborhood that was a huge confidence booster. The next day on 3/19 I ran the Jon Kinne Half Marathon and did 13.1 miles. It was the longest run I have done since the last half I did in October. I did pretty well, sore abs and feet, but I definitely crashed at mile 11. I was still hurting from the surgery and I realized that I had to start increasing my calorie and carbs daily. But I finished and my splits were pretty good! (dont forget to be my friend on runkeeper)

 https://runkeeper.com/user/jkinne1/profile )

I had our musical that night and the next day so it was a busy weekend, also keeping my diet and stress levels in check has been something that I have had to manage better but I am proud to say both are improving!

Week 13! was great. I only ran 5 miles during the week as a result of sore abs and the 13.1 seemed to cause a strain in my right foot which slowed me down. I’m currently stretching it and having it treated by my “witch-doctor” (acupuncture, it works btw, he is a real doctor) and I’m getting back on track. Got to see Marissa Yoda biking on the trail rockin some aviators!

On last weekend’s long run I set a new personal record of 15 Miles! My splits were good and I felt much better than the 13.1. I employed some gels and was glad that they did not upset my stomach. I do not know if they helped or not but I will use them again this weekend.

Also, to prevent further injury I realized it was time for some new running shoes so I got these fancy kicks

imgres-7

They are the Asics Nimbus 18’s. I had the 17’s which I now think I like better. I also foolishly decided to “break em in” on my 15 mile run, not my best decision. I got them at Roadrunner SPORTS!  so I have 90 days to return them if I don’t like them but during my training runs this week they are loosening up so I’m going to give them another chance. I have found that spending the money on really good shoes is absolutely worth it. I did the family VIP plan at road runner last year too and also went back for new custom insoles. Also not cheap but again worth it to avoid injury, especially if you have Wilma Flintsone feet like me 😉

I am so grateful to have received sooo many donations and our campaign is at 76% of our goal!!!! The race is exactly one month from today so please spread the word and ask for donations to the AFSP! 100% of every dollar goes directly to the AFSP which does great work for our loved ones who need it the most. (Link to the left and below) even a dollar helps!

SPARTA Week 12!

Hi all,

I did 5 more miles yesterday and will attempt 13.1 today! Im Back!!!

I tried running for the first time last Saturday March 12 for the first time post surgery. Honestly I was nervous that I would not be able to run without pain and that I had regressed too much to continue. My biggest fear was that I had missed too much training and the Marathon would be in jeopardy.  So my goal was just to attempt a mile or so and reassess at each mile.

Mile one- Felt pretty good, slow and heavy but no pain.

Mile two- Pain, like a cramp, right abdomen but not bad enough to stop or go back.

Mile three- felt great to be out! I was still slow and heavy but I decided to see if I could do 5miles so I picked a route that I could bail on easily should the pain get too bad.

Miles 4-5- I DID IT! Smiling and laughing the whole time because of this:

In mile one I ran past this:

12809632_10101711179519582_3703719506129197856_n

I find that Eddie and Freddy speak to me in ways that I can not really explain when Im running. I often think of them, hence the name, and definitely feel their life force often which feels great and is very motivating. So this one was the best! They once again encouraged me to push on and tap into my inner warrior spirt. So I listened, smiled as I planned to end my 5 miles at the site above.

To celebrate my return to the road and training for the NJ Marathon-

This is how I rolled home!

Week 11

Greetings all,

It is officially 7 days since the ol’ GB and I parted ways. The past week has been interesting but I’m doing better every day. I am not 100% yet so I have put off trying to run until tomorrow at the earliest and honestly need some rest.  So just trying to take it as easy as possible over the next few days to get better faster.

I turned 37 on March 9th and I would like to thank everyone for all of the great Birthday Wishes this week and wish my fellow B-Day buddies (Erica, Chris, Kayla, Thein, Tricia L., Samuel Barber and Kato Kaelin) a happy one as well! Im sure I missed a couple of you, sorry.

I would also like to pour one out to my Homie Biggie Smalls

and wish my birthday roommate Amy a Happy Birthday on March 10th. (Our mom’s labored together in a hospital room on the days we were born. We then proceeded to go to the same nursery school, live in the same town and went to High School together as well 🙂

I am a believer in that you get back what you put out there so I am grateful for all of the well wishes and positive feedback that has been sent my way from all of my Friends, Family, and Co-workers over the past week. I also got great gifts from my wife and kids which I will use to gear up for the Marathon on May 1st. I would love to hear Marathon tips (foods, gels, clothes, drinks, rituals etc.) So leave some comments!

The greatest birthday gift I could ask for this year, besides socks of course, thanks Nicole 😉  Would be a donation to my personal campaign for the AFSP (link on the left) if you have not done so already. If you have thanks! then tell someone else about it and get them to donate too! $1,$2 or $100,0000 anything is great and 100% goes to the AFSP who help those who are in need.

Additionally, Mrs. Joanne Fiume is running a beefsteak in honor of her late husband Fred (The Freddy in Running for Eddie and Freddy) Word doc and PDF flyer attached below. The Date is April 16th at the Elks in Rutherford. Deadline to mail in the flyer is April 10th.

Week 10 is a 10 out of 10…ten ten ten tenten

12043057_10101700992903642_711127157732263786_n

Me Post Operation! 3/4/16

OK. SO, week 10 has 0 miles. As I said in week NEUN! I had to have my gallbladder removed, and that happened on Friday. Lets rewind to give credit where it is due. This all started around Thanksgiving while running a Turkey-Trot 5k with Eileen and my Sister in law Beth I actually, for the first time ever, had to stop and take a knee in the last .2 miles out of pain and nausea. Thought it was a stomach virus. FFW the symptoms would come and go but eventually gained intensity. In complaining one morning at school, Mrs. Nicole Bowden called it, “Gallstones” she said. After contacting my friend and MD, Dr. Stavros Christoudious and telling him my symptoms, he also said “Sounds like it’s your gallbladder, your text book”

After a few doctors, medicine, Sonogram, CT Scan, Blood tests, Nuclear HYDA Scan test, endoscopy and colonoscopy, all of which told me that my gallbladder looked ok and was not obstructed BTW, we decided that we have exhausted all possible causes and it had to be it since everything else looked fine. So we changed my diet, tried some antibiotics and there it was, big improvement in symptoms proving that something was up with the ol’ GB. This is a very typical story apparently. The symptoms are common with many other gastrointestinal issues so I have learned to make sure you communicate with your doctors effectively and push for what you believe is going on.

In removing my gallbladder we ( I say we because I was there;-) we found multiple small stones in my very twisted bile duct and good ol’ sludge bile in my gallbladder, thus proving that it was my gallbladder all along. Whats up now tests :-[  !

I am thankful for Dr. Christudious in telling me to trust my body and diagnosing me appropriately (quickly) while still exhausting all other possibilities. His first priority was my well being which I really appreciate. I also had a great experience at the Vanguard Surgical Center in Maywood NJ. Super clean, very attentive, and on schedule. I’ll be going there for all of my major surgeries 😉 Seriously though the nurses, doctors and staff were awesome and took great care of me. I closed my eyes and it was all over in a blink:-)

imgres-6

Any how, Im in a good amount of pain but it’s getting better every day and I feel like I will be all good in a few. I am supposed to be able to start running again mid week but Im going to take it day by day. Im looking forward to running and eating normally again but I am very grateful that all of this is really just a big inconvenience and not anything very serious. As a matter of fact, all of the testing and surgery has shown that I have very healthy organs! I am also grateful that I am able to get top quality medical treatment when I need it. I realize that is not a reality for a lot of people in our country and the rest of the world so I am very humbled by this experience and have an “enlightened” view of healthcare in the US.

Overall, I am grateful for all of the love and well wishes sent my way. I appreciate all of the support especially from my wife Eileen who has the privilege of dealing with me over the past few days ;-). My Doctor/Friend who fixed me up and all of my family and friends who have helped along the way.

I am especially encouraged by the donations to the AFSP! In week 10 we shot up from 35% to 60% of our goal!! That is huge!!!! I am confident that we will reach 100%+ by May 1st, I thank everyone who has donated so far and I hope we are all very proud that we are honoring the memory of two great guys along the way! (link to donate to the left)

Thanks all! Back to running!!!

Week NEUN!

Ok so week nine saw around 8 miles. I did 4 on monday and schlepped my way through 3.5 on the tread mill yesterday. I had a big run planned for today but I felt really bad on monday and yesterday post run so I must listen to reason (My wife Eileen) and just wait until my surgery is done to continue marathon training.

“What surgery?” you say.  After exhausting all possible causes of my abdominal pain, pressure, bloat etc. my medical team and I (HA!) have determined that the Ol’ Gallbladder just is not what it used to be and has to go. Im having it removed on Friday 3/4 by the esteemed Dr. Christudious. I am also now a self proclaimed expert in all things gallbladder so I have that going for me. Any how, I will resume training a week or so after my surgery which will give me six weeks to ensure success at the NJ Marathon.

gallbladder

Thats not me 😉 But doesn’t it look like Tiger Woods! ha!

There is good news that has come out of all of this though. Since I was very consistent with my training up to this point, having this physical hiccup should not slow me down too much. I will have to adjust the training program a bit but I’m very confident in running the race on 5/1. One thing that I can say I am very proud of in my life is that when I set my mind to doing something, I always get it done.

The best news in all of this was that all of my medical tests have shown a very healthy me so far! I have read that when men hit their 30’s they, at some point, realize their mortality.  I can truly attest to this, but as scary as it can be it has given me some wonderful prospective and new positive attitudes towards life. I like to think of this quote when I experience doubt and use it as motivation to achieve what I once thought impossible:

Week 8- Presence!

Hey Kids!

Well week 8 has only seen 3 miles so far. I spent last week being poked, prodded, dyed, drugged, photographed and at one point I was made Radioactive! Good news is that all is clear so far! Bad news is I am still trying to figure it all out. Any way I am grateful for the ability to receive medical attention when I need it and for all of the well wishes I have received over the past week or so, I am a very, very grateful and fortunate guy.

So depending on how I feel over the next two days or so will dictated my weekend long run. I am scheduled to do 13.1 but I do not want to upset my system too much so that may be reduced or eliminated. I am not even half way through the program and I was very consistent up until last week so I’m not worried about loosing any ground. No matter what I am still raising money for the AFSP. Link to the left! Please join our campaign!

I also would like to recommend a TED talk and/or a book Im reading called Presence by Amy Cuddy. She has a pretty amazing story and has done some really great research.

Week 7 Time Out:-)

Greetings all!

Unfortunately I have to call a Time Out for Week 7, 0 miles. I am currently trying to get to the bottom of some internal discomfort and my Dr.’s are telling me not to run :-(. So that being said I’m skipping week 7 and I plan to pick up with week 8 on Tuesday! The timing is actually perfect since here in NJ it is single digits wind chill so I’m not too broken up about it.

I do want to thank an old Ramsey High School friend who has helped me tremendously over the past week or so in guiding me and providing advice on my current condition.

Dr. Stavros Christoudias.

Stavros is definitely the best doctor I have ever worked with and I am very glad to say is still an awesome human being! I Saved Week 6

Thanks so much to two of my oldest and dearest friends Stacia Klui Grosse and Jeff Grosse for their generous donation to our personal campaign for the AFSP! Spread the word we are doing great at 26% of our goal!

Ok week 6 was supposed to be 3/5/3 and 7 miles. Did not run at all until Friday where I did a 5 mile. I’ve been dealing with some abdominal issues which I’m just starting to get to the bottom of thanks to another old friend  Dr. Stavros Christoudias. Great Guy and awesome doctor! More on him in future posts but definitely helped me out Big Time yesterday and today so I am very grateful!

Just finished my long run of 7 miles so I only missed my two very short runs which is no big deal. I felt ok today on the run and the weather was GREAT! I have been neglecting my stretching routine and I am paying the price for it now. In general though I don’t feel very well and was rather tired today. I do not mention these things to complain, actually quite the opposite, I was thinking today that I am grateful to this habit for reinforcing my self-discipline. I run even when I do not want to, in all kinds of weather and I always finish what I set out to do.I am very proud of that. I find that it reinforces confidence and opens up the mind to believing in achieving the impossible. My favorite mantra while running is “Why not me?”

Week Six is …

Photo on 2-3-16 at 5.22 PM

Hey all,

Well week six so far has seen 0 miles. Monday was a rest day, I had a concert last night so no running, today is raining and I missed my kids so I picked them up instead of running, tomorrow I have a Dr. apt and a meeting at 7 pm. SOOOOO I have to get out to do 5 miles Friday definitely and do my long run Saturday, 7 Miles. I may see if I can do a quick 3 miles in the AM before work but doubtful. I do not like running right when I wake up.

Lack of miles this week is ok. It is a step back week any way.

Look what we earned!
